I don’t know about you, but I’ve watched countless videos online showcasing the simplicity of making smash burgers. After many unsuccessful attempts, I’ve finally mastered the technique and created delicious burgers. So, I thought I’d share with you an actually straightforward recipe that makes it easy to whip up these mouthwatering delights.
Ingredients
- Burger buns
- ground beef (seriously any meat to fat ratio works I’ve tried them all)
- cheese slices
- avocado oil
- onions
- lettuce
- tomato
- pickles
- Any meat seasoning preferred.
So I left the ingredients a touch broad, I want you to be able to choose the amount you make but I will go more into detail in the description.
Burger

Let’s talk about the beef itself, I’ve tried to keep this as simple as possible and honestly the simplicity gives the strongest results.
- 30 minutes before intended cooking, grab your ground beef and start rolling it into balls, about 4 ounces or 1/4 a pound balls. Be quick and try not to overwork or squish the meat, you don’t want to get a pureed feel from the beef. Do not season, we will do that later.
- Wrap in saran and place in fridge for 30 minutes.
Vegetables

Toppings are the best part of the burger I believe, but with that being said feel free to add more or remove some from your burger as we all enjoy different toppings.
- While burgers are resting, slice onions thinly, a mandolin would be ideal but anything you have will work.
- Slice tomatoes thinly, remove seeds if too watery
- Slice pickles
- Have lettuce ready
Cooking
Now it’s time to cook these burgers. Grab any seasoning you would like to use, I love cowboy butter seasoning on my burger for a salty taste. Have cheese ready on standby.
- Heat large pan on stove to medium high heat. Apply avocado oil as it’s a high smoke point oil and shouldn’t burn.
- Once pan is heated place 2 burgers in the pan, add sliced onions on top and smash with whatever you have ensuring you have parchment paper between burger and smashing object to prevent sticking. Spread meat using smasher to ensure it’s thinly pressed. I use a burger press but you can use another pan, plate, cup, whatever is available to you and safe from heat.
3. Remove parchment paper immediately after smashing and now season your burgers. Wait 2 minutes then flip burger being careful and fast to ensure burger doesn’t break.
4. Season flipped side of burger, then wait 2 minutes again.
5. Flip one more time then add cheese slice to both patties and stack one patty on the second. Cover with something to ensure cheese melts and wait 30 seconds.
6. Remove patties and place on plate. Add burger buns to same pan and toast for 1 minute flipping once to warm patties.
7. remove buns and assemble burger. Top with preferred toppings and add sauce such as aioli or mayo for added flavour.
Enjoy!
