Bread is the centre of any home. Not only does it pair well with almost any food, but it is an easy on the go snack. Making bread from scratch seems like a lot of work. While it does take time out of your day, the actual process of making the bread is quick.
This recipe makes a fluffy white bread that when warm, tastes like restuarant quality bread. I often pair this recipe with butter for toast, or small sandwiches. As said, this is the most basic bread can get so it’s just a white crispy loaf.
Cooking time – 3 hours
Yeild – 2 loafs
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of white sugar
- 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
- 2 cups of warm water (warm not hot, if too hot your yeast will die)
- 3 1/2 cups of flour (can use all purpose or bread flour, bread flour will make loaf more fluffy)
Yeast

We first want to start by blooming your yeast. Its crucial as you want to make sure your yeast is alive and you can tell by the slight foaming in the water.
- Mix together your yeast, salt and warm water. Give it a good mix first and let it rest for 5-10 minutes.
- At this point your yeast mixure should be bloomed and you can tell by the slight foaming in the bowl.
- Slowly start adding your flower mixing along the way. This will help it incoporate easier and once incorporated knead the bread until all the flour is mixed in.
- Once mixed in grab a clean bowl with lots of room and coat the inside with flour so your dough doesn’t stick.
- Place dough in and cover with a damp cloth or saran wrap. This is important so your bread doesn’t dry during proofing.
Now we want to let our bread proof for 1-2 hours. During this time it will raise double to triple it’s size. For proofing put in a warm area as it will help the dough rise.
Baking

Now it’s time to bake your soon to be bread!
- After your dough has doubled in size, you know its ready to bake. Before anything else set your oven to 375-400F depending on how hot your oven runs.
- Once the oven is on, on your cutting board put a healthy layer of flour down so your dough doesn’t stick. When taking your bread out, be careful not to handle your dough rough as you dont want to pop the air bubbles that have formed.
- Now that your bread is out sprinkle it with flour as it will be stick and cut in half for two loafs. Shape them in ovals very gently, and place onto a baking sheet.
- Score you bread so heat can escape, I usually do 3 scores with one on each end and one in the middle.
- Grab out a small tray that can hold water and fill it and insert into your oven, this will help the bread stay moist at the beggining of the cooking process.
- Now you can put your bread in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. You will know it’s done when the top is crispy and golden brown.
Once your bread is finished you can take it out and let it rest for 45 minutes to an hour. Then enjoy!
